Congratulations to Oregon!
Congratulations to Oregon!
SB 571, a strong smokefree bill, passed through the Oregon legislature and now goes to Governor Kulongoski who is expected to sign the bill into law. The Beaver State's new law will prohibit smoking in all places of employment, including restaurants and bars. The bill also includes a reasonable distance clause of 10' from doorways, windows and ventilation intakes. The law specifies no smoking in hospitals. Smoking may still be allowed in up to 25% of hotel/motel rooms, private homes except when used for child/adult care, ceremonial events, smoke shops (75%+ sales), and cigar bars. The law also repeals preemption! Effective January 1, 2009.
Kudos to TOFCO and everyone in Oregon who worked so hard to keep this bill intact despite numerous challenges along the way. There are still several bills alive in other states this session so we hope this step forward will encourage out-of-state legislators to keep their own bills strong as well. Link
