Looking for a good hypnosis starter book from Erickson
For the most part, Erickson wrote academic papers, so most of the
books published with his name, consist of transcripts of sessions and
conversations with him, attempting to deconstruct what had occurred.
There are a bunch of books that I would recommend that give overviews
of Erickson and his work. Each one approaches Erickson from a
different point of view. (These are not in any particular order.)
1) Uncommon Therapy by Jay Haley
This is the first book about Erickson. This book talks about
Erickson the therapist, not so much about Erickson the hypnotherapist.
2) Ericksonian Approaches by Rubin Battino and Thomas South
This is intended as a training guide for an Ericksonian hypnosis
class, a lot of it from an NLP perspective. It is the most
comprehensive introduction to Erickson that I know of.
3) A Teaching Seminar with Milton H Erickson edited by Jeffrey Zeig
Transcript from an actually seminar run by Erickson with commentary
from Jeff Zeig. This will be more useful after you're familisr with
Erickson's techniques.
4) Milton H. Erickson M.D. An American Healer edited by Betty Alice
Erickson and Bradford Keeney
This is a more personal introduction to Erickson, the man, not the
hypnotherapist. It also comes with a DVD of an Erickson session.
I would also second Avi's recommendation of My Voice Will Go WIth You
by Sidney Rosen. It is a collection of Erickson's teaching stories.
