Smoking violations are reported to Iowa Deptartment of Health
By BOB LINK,
MASON CITY — In the first 10 days of Iowa’s Smokefree Air Act, the state Department of Public Health received 237 complaints of possible violations of the public smoking
ban.
To date, authorities have not busted into any smoke-filled bars. They have not handcuffed or shackled any smokers, and they haven’t closed any establishments.
And, according to the Iowa Department of Public Health, no one will be handcuffed and no businesses will be closed.
“It’s an educational process,” said Brent Saron, a community health consultant with the Iowa Department of Public Health. “Education is a key to compliance.”
The Iowa law, which went into effect July 1, applies to restaurant, bars, food service establishments, outdoor sports arenas and amphitheaters.
It also covers places of employment such as office buildings, health care facilities and child care facilities.
Assistant Cerro Gordo County Attorney Carlyle Dalen said the county attorney’s office has started to get calls with people questioning what establishments are included in the law.
“Right now there just seems to be a lot of questions with not a lot of clear answers,” said Dalen.
