The California Legislature returned to session August 4
The California Legislature returned to session August 4, after a month-long recess. The main focus of the Legislature will be passing a state budget which is over a month late, but the Legislature will also continue with hearings and votes on all the bills that are still alive (including three tobacco-related bills) because the end of the 2008 legislative session is near.
The three tobacco-related bills (AB 2344: Annual Fee for State Tobacco Retailer License, AB 2662: Clarifying Tobacco Cessation Benefits for Medi-Cal and AB 3010: Prohibiting Tobacco Use at State Mental Hospitals) are all scheduled for a hearing before the Senate Appropriations Committee today. If these bills are passed by the Appropriations Committee they will move to the floor for a vote by the full Senate.
The Legislature will adjourn for the year on or before August 31. All bills must be passed by both houses and sent to the Governor for his signature before this date. As the legislative activity increases on tobacco-related bills during the final weeks of session, I will send out weekly legislative updates.
