Gov. Beshear: Students and Medicaid recipients likely to feel budget hurt if cigarette tax isn't approved
(WHAS11) - Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear has begun his big sales pitch. He was in western Kentucky Thursday night, in Louisville on Friday, trying to drum up support for hiking the tax on cigarettes.
But it isn't going to be easy. A key component of the Governor's plan to plug the $456 million dollar hole in the state budget is to raise the cigarette tax 70 cents per pack.
That would put Kentucky's cigarette tax far above the average of surrounding states and makes it more likely that Beshear may have to settle for a smaller tax hike, if he gets one at all.
