Shift Awareness
If you think about a current personal problem, what are you not aware of that if you were aware of it your problem would be a non issue?
You see, if you have an issue, lets say shyness, for example, and you say, "I am shy," what you are really doing is locking your awareness onto the experience of shyness to the exclusion of everything else. Its like you are really focused on shyness. I mean really, really focused on it. And when you do that, you are also defining or setting up the experience of non-shyness, by default. You can't know what shyness is without also knowing what non-shyness is.
You can't know what shyness is without also knowing what non-shyness is because the only way you know what something is is by contrasting it with what it is not. They only way you know what shyness is is by contrasting it with what shyness is not. Therefore, if you know what it is to be shy, you also know what it is to be non-shy.
One of my teachers used to say that the problem is the solution. And he is quite right. A person so focused on a problem like shyness has only to turn his attention in the opposite direction to see the solution.
A fish who has never been out of water has no awareness of water, because it has nothing to contrast it with. But once the fish has experienced being out of water, then it knows it is in water. And since you say you know what it is to be shy, I am saying you also know what it is to be non-shy, although this knowledge is not part of your everyday consciousness, its more a part of your unconscious knowledge. In any event, this gives rise to my opening question.
What are you not aware of (being non-shy) that if you were aware of it your problem would be a non issue? You can think of it as being like an optical illusion. Take, for example, the picture below. Do you see the 2 heads looking at each other? Do you see the golden vase? Do you see the two sitting Mexicans, one of whom has a guitar? Your focus on being shy is like being focused on one part of the picture, so much so, that you don't see the other parts.

A hypnotic trance is really good for helping to break up the habitual habit of being focused on a problem to the exclusion of the solution. It helps to break down the boundaries between the problem and the solution. It helps you to see where the solution is.
