4-16-2009 Center Policy Update: Action on SB 600 Delayed
On April 15, SB 600 (Increasing the State Tobacco Tax by Senator Padilla) was scheduled for a hearing before the Senate Health Committee. However, the bill was taken off the agenda for that hearing and legislative action on SB 600 has been delayed. This is due to a decision by Senate leadership to delay action on all tax and revenue bills until after the May 19 special election. There are six ballot initiatives that are being voted on in the special election that relate to the state’s budget, including a spending cap, new taxes, shifting of existing revenues and other elements.
Many other tobacco-related bills continue to move forward in the legislative process. The Center’s Bill Tracker is updated several times a week and has all the latest details on bill amendments, committee votes and organizations supporting or opposing bills. Legislative action from this week detailed on the Bill Tracker includes the Senate Health Committee passing SB 602 (Restricting State Tobacco Retailer Licenses and Revising the STAKE Act) and the following bills being amended: AB 574 (Prohibiting Smoking at Hospitals by Assembly Member Hill); SB 601 (Restricting Eligibility for State Tobacco Retailer Licenses by Senator Padilla); SB 602 (Restricting State Tobacco Retailer Licenses and Revising the STAKE Act); and SB 603 (Creating Annual Fee for and Limiting Issuance of State Tobacco Retailer License by Senator Padilla).
