6-5-2009 Don't let Big Tobacco and other corporate interests eliminate OEHHA under the guise of a bad economy!
In response to California's budget crisis, Governor Schwarzenegger's May budget revision disturbingly recommends the elimination of the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA).
OEHHA is a small, highly effective state office of dedicated health scientists, located within the California EPA, who look out for the well being of California's air quality, public health, and environment through vigorous scientific evaluation.
In 2006, OEHHA and the Air Resources Board made California a national leader when they declared secondhand smoke a toxic air contaminant, which is defined as an air pollutant that may cause or contribute to an increase in deaths or in serious illness and/or poses potential hazard to human health.
As a result of this declaration, OEHHA and the Air Resources Board were charged with preparing a Risk Reduction Report on recommended actions to further reduce exposure to secondhand smoke, such as public education programs to increase awareness and understanding of exposure and health effects, as well as additional opportunities to reduce exposure and close gaps in protection. Originally scheduled to be released in January, the Risk Reduction Report has been delayed several times, and we fear that this action to eliminate OEHHA could further impair the release of this key report.
