Today, July 22, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) made an announcement about the health effects of electronic cigarettes
(e-cigarettes). An FDA analysis of several electronic cigarettes found that e-cigarettes contain carcinogens and toxic chemicals, including an ingredient that is found in antifreeze. In addition, the FDA has stated that it is concerned about the safety of these products and how they are being marketed to the public. The FDA has detained some shipments of e-cigarettes at the border and the agency has indicated that it will be taking additional activities to address their concerns about e-cigarettes.
All of the FDA documents, including a News Release, Summary of the FDA Analyses and documents related to a court case challenging the FDA jurisdiction over e-cigarettes, are available at www.fda.gov/NewsEvents/PublicHealthFocus/ucm172906.htm. And attached is a press statement from the American Lung Association that applauds the FDA for this announcement and encourages the agency to take additional actions.
