The Stop Smoking Hypnosis People
Congratulations to Sitka, Alaska, for passing a smokefree ordinance by 54% on the ballot yesterday! These are not final results as there are 550 ballots left to count but (fingers crossed) the results are likely to remain the same.
Steve Warren, Wilbur Brown, and Sitka's Alliance for Healthy Communities, worked hard to ensure this smokefree ordinance would pass. Thanks to their no-nonsense feet-on-the-ground campaign, they were able to reach out and educate non-traditional groups to ensure strong support from the broader Sitka community. Thanks to their efforts, Sitka workplaces (including restaurants) will be smokefree starting November 18th. The ordinance exempts free-standing bars.
More great news... Both Sitka and the Mat-Su Borough also earned victories in their tax campaigns yesterday. Sitka passed a $1 per pack tobacco tax by 60% (profits will go to their local hospital). The Mat-Su Borough voters defeated an attempt to repeal the $1 per pack tobacco tax by 56%. Congratulations, Alaska!
