Dear Ex-Smoker or Future Ex-Smoker,
On Saturday, November 5th, Philip Morris will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Marlboro brand. How is it commemorating the cigarette's golden year? With a series of carefully selected invitation-only crowds, who will be gathering in 49 undisclosed cities across the country. You have to be in Marlboro's clubs to even know about them.
Who will be singing "Happy Birthday" to the tobacco giant? An A-List line-up of musicians, such as Lenny Kravitz, John Mellencamp, Marc Anthony, and Tantric, will headline Marlboro concerts in New York, Chicago, Miami, and Louisville. This is just part of Philip Morris's ongoing multi-million dollar effort to target and addict young adults (18 to 25-year olds) through "buzz marketing" at live music events and bars.
Don't these musicians owe it to the health of their fans to sing a different tune?
Help "celebrate" Marlboro's 50-year legacy of addiction, disease, and death. Take action NOW!
Write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper. "Congratulate" Marlboro on its 50th birthday, and express your sincere disappointment with the musicians listed above for headlining for Big Tobacco. They are supposed to be role models for their fans, not supporters of a product known to kill them off. Forty percent of young adults are current smokers, thanks to the cigarette company's marketing tactics.
Write an alternative "Happy Birthday, Marlboro!" card. Share it with your local coalition and media, and send your card to Healthy Life Centers. We are working with youth and young adult advocacy groups across the country to hold Philip Morris accountable for its 50 years of marketing a deadly product to people of all ages. We will be gathering birthday cards from advocates that we hope to present to the tobacco company at the Altria shareholders meeting in Spring 2006. Please mail all cards to Healthy Life Centers 19792 Ranger Lane, Huntington Beach, CA 92646.
Call (888) 865-1870 and let us know how you feel about this "celebration".
Encourage youth and young adult advocates to organize local events, celebrating Marlboro's birthday. Perhaps a "Deathday" cake would be in order?
Support smokefree legislation. Youth and young adult smoking rates are significantly lower in areas with smokefree bars, restaurants, and workplaces. It's hard for Marlboro to make its toxic product fashionable in smokefree settings. Smokefree air makes it easier for smokers to quit.
Let us help you forget all about smoking. That's our biggest contribution.
