New Years Resolutions

New Years Resolutions
Consider these ideas when making your New Year's Resolutions. Make your resolutions are:
• stated in the positive.
• measureable.
• achievable.
• responsible.
• set in time.
• intentional.

In discussing this, lets use the resolution, "I want to stop making so little money," as an example.

Stated in the Positive. This idea is most important. You tend to bring to life that which you focus on. So focusing on "stopping making so little money" is not a good thing to focus on because you are really focusing on "making little money." If I tell you to not think of a purple elephant, the only way you can do that is to think of the very thing I tell you to not think of. Same with this example resolution. If you use this resolution as stated, you will end of getting more of the same, little money.

This example resolution is what we call an "away from motivation strategy". It propels you, if at all, away from something, in this case, the state of making little money. If it works at all, and you start making more money, then what? There is nothing to keep propelling you forward. And you end of falling backward. This kind of motivation is a major reason for yo-yo dieting. A person will say, "I want to lose weight." So they lose a little weight, and then the away from strategy stops working because they are away from the original state, so they fall bac-kwards and gain weight.

So make your resolutions stated in the positive. How about, "I want to make more money." Make your resolution be statement of where you are headed, not about avoiding where you are coming from. In other words, play to win, not playing to avoid losing.

Are Measurable. So, in the new year, you make $100 more than last year. You've achieved your resolution! But is that what you really wanted? Lesson here is make your resolution definite and measurable. Say, "I want to make $10,000" more money than in 2008. Now that is measurable.

Are Achievable. The idea here is that you want to make sure your goal is possible or achievable. If you make $20,000 in 2008 and your goal is to make one million dollars in 2009, well is that really possible in your circumstances? Be realistic in your resolutions. Don't be stupid and say that you are going to lose 10 lbs a week for the next 10 weeks. Make it achievable!

Make it Responsible. Your actions have effects on the people around you and on the world at large. Take everything into consideration when making your resolutions. If your goal is to sail around the world in 2009 that is great. However, if you have 3 kids to support and love and nurture, and you are needed at home, well, maybe taking a year off to sail around the world is not the most responsible thing to do at this time. Only you can decide the right course of action. Just know, that if you are not responsible, it has a way of coming back and biting you in the keister!
Set In Time. This is related to the "measurable" idea. Make your resolution have a time. In stead of "I am going to lose 10 pounds" say, "I am going to lose 10 pounds in 10 weeks." Otherwise, you could end up losing your 10 pounds in 10 years and your goal has been achieved!

Make It Intentional. There are all kinds of people wanting with all their hearts for things to happen and achieve but still it does not work. The missing ingredient is often times that of intention. Its all well and good to want something, but you also have to intend it to happen. To make $10,000 more in 2009 than in 2008 you have to intend it, which is to say, you have to identify with being a person that can and does that kind of thing.
This idea of intention, if you are really honest with yourself, often brings up the realizations that you don't really identify with being the kind of person who can achieve your resolution. If you are making $20,000 a year and your goal is to make $100,000 a year, but you really on a gut level only identify with being a person who can make $20,000 a year, then no way are you going to pull off your resolution.
This idea of intention has to do with who you believe yourself to be. If you have beliefs about yourself that conflict with your resolutions, then there won't be any movement towards achieving your resolutions until your beliefs about yourself become more aligned with what you want to achieve.

The ways and means of changing your beliefs about yourself is beyond the scope of this newsletter. Suffice it to say, this is something I help people change in my practice. Consider, for a moment, what it would make possible for you, if you were to change some of the limiting beliefs and attitudes you have about yourself. How high would you then be able to fly? If I can be of service to you, to help you really go for it, let me know. Another way to lean how to work with your limiting beliefs is to take the workshop talked about here.
