Pfizer’s once touted stop smoking drug has recreated yet another black eye: A study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal found that Pfizer’s anti-smoking drug Chantix poses significant cardiovascular risks, and is linked to a 72% greater risk of hospitalization due to a serious adverse cardiovascular event like a heart attack or arrhythmia.

President Nixon signed the Public Health Cigarette Smoking Act

President Richard Nixon didn’t think cigarettes were anything to joke about when he signed the Public Health Cigarette Smoking Act into law on April 1, 1970.

Warnings on cigarette packages had started appearing in 1965 following the 1964 report, Smoking and Health, Report of the Advisory Committee to the Surgeon General of the United States.

With Nixon’s endorsement, the anti-tobacco movement kicked into high gear.

What’s common knowledge today was big news at the time when cigarette advertising included doctor endorsements, pictures of babies and even Santa Claus. Generally, the public already had an inkling of the problems smoking caused, but there was still plenty of doubt as everyone waited to hear from the country’s leaders.

Nu-Calm ?

(NBC) – There is a new way to relieve anxiety about going under the dentist’s drill, and it doesn’t involve needles or prescription drugs.

Dentists hope a new procedure called Nu-Calm will get patients who stay away from their offices for years back into their chairs.

Dr. Stall is one dentist who offers the alternative to laughing gas and sedation in an effort to keep patients relaxed while he works.

“It’s a very natural way to help someone relax,” he said.

Nu-Calm is a four-step process. First, a patient takes the supplements gaba and l-theanine. Stall explained these are “basically the same thing your body produces when you are ready for sleep.”
